"We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months." -- via Google Blog
I'm not surprised, but it looks like google reader meets its inevitable end. Since google reader gives users the ability to friend, follow and share stories with others, I guess this means the end of Google Friend Connect (GFC) too?!!
Thankfully I saw this coming awhile ago and started using Bloglovin to follow all my favorite blogs. I actually imported all the blogs I followed via google reader into Bloglovin which made the transition really simple.
I plan to post a tutorial either tonight or tomorrow on how to do this. But in the mean time, you can follow me on Bloglovin here:
Yes, tutorial, please! I'm a Google Reader gal.
ReplyDeleteWill have it posted tomorrow! Also going to start a new blog hop just for bloglovin -- planning to have it on Saturday I think! :)
DeleteI was just searching around trying to find out a definitive answer if GFC was getting the boot as well as reader. It's a shame they're getting rid of it when clearly a ton of bloggers/readers use it.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the tutorial though!
I couldn't find a definite answer either; I wouldn't be surprised if they do, but hard to say. Bloglovin is actually much easier to use, and you can organize the blogs you follow into different "groups" etc.
DeleteI have to admit, I'm pretty upset about the loss of Google Reader...but thankfully I already have a Bloglovin account, so at least it's easy enough to transition!

Bloglovin even added a new feature to simplify the transfer of your feeds. Much quicker/easier than the tutorial I posted.
Deletei dunno what i'm going to do but its between blog lovin and feedly.
ReplyDeleteI'm a personal fan of bloglovin' ... though I did check out feedly the other day. May provide readers with options for both, not sure!
DeleteI'm visiting from Aloha Friday. Glad to connect. Please join me on my Friday Flash Blog on The Jenny Evolution (www.thejennyevolution.com) as well and share your favorite post of the week. Happy Friday :-)
ReplyDeleteThank Jennifer, I will check it out! :)
