"Oct. 27 8:04 p.m. PDT UPDATE. A M 7.7 earthquake has occurred in the Haida Gwaii Region. A tsunami warning has been issued from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Alaska - for more information check with local emergency management officials."
I hate earthquakes. Thankfully, I have only experienced two during my 28 years living in Vancouver, BC. The most recent one was just over a year ago - thankfully I didn't feel it, and the first earthquake I ever experienced was when I was in grade 8.
Tonight's earthquake we did not feel, but it still very close to home. Its a reminder, to me at least, that we are long over due for "the BIG ONE." When Japan had their large earthquake, a lot of other ones were triggered. I hope that is not the case with this large 7.7 magnitude earthquake because I really do not want to feel this apartment swaying back and forth, or worse.
Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

I'm in PG! We totally felt it. We were out for dinner, some of us were confused and thought our wine was getting too us. It was totally different than the Vancouver Eathquakes. More like a rocky boat.
ReplyDeleteI'm from Vancouver originally, I can remember 2 earth quakes growing up. The first, probably being the same one you experienced.
I think it was a different type of earthquake (plate movements, thus maybe why it felt more like a rocky boat. I think I heard that the 7.7 quake was the two plates sliding past one another?
DeleteI experienced an earthquake a few years ago when living in L.A.. I'm from Michigan, so it was almost surreal. It took me a minute to figure out why the house was shaking and the dog was going crazy. It was just a little one, but I will never forget watching the waves in the pool. That made it more real than anything.

I'm in Ottawa. We don't get large-scale earthquakes (that could cause devastations) but we are located where we get a bunch of small ones. The biggest one I've felt was a 4.something, 2 years ago. I was at work, in a tall building, on the 6th floor. It felt as though the floor was moving left and right and the walls were not following. It lasted approximately 10 seconds or so...but it seemed long. Everyone left the building. And we weren't allowed back in just in case there had been structural damage. It needed to be checkout out by engineers first.
ReplyDeleteI live in an apartment building, 21st floor - the whole idea of being in the building during a big quake terrifies me.
DeleteSaid a prayer for you guys this morning! We don't get earthquakes in Maryland but had our first one last year, it was tiny but was still unnerving. Then last year when we were traveling to Victoria we were there for yours last year! (Thankfully we were on a boat & didn't feel it.) Glad you guys are ok!
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz! The quake last year, I was also on water at time, I didn't feel anything either. Apparently there was another one just an hour ago in the same area, 6.8. Yikes!
DeleteI grew up in Seattle and felt minor ones often. I've never been in anything too big though. They are scary! I hope everything stays okay!
ReplyDeleteI hope so too, thanks! :)

Thanks Sarah, I am now following you as well!
DeleteDear Chelsea,
ReplyDeleteI am from the Pacific NW and I am always concerned for my family because The Big One is bound to hit at some point and destroy everything. At least that's what I've heard for most of my life. The first quake I felt was spring break 8th grade (perhaps related to your quake?) I woke up to it at 5am completely terrified and couldn't go back to sleep. Since then, I've always been wary of earthquakes. I have survived many but still scared. I even went through one in Oklahoma, which was weird and unexpected. Quakes are not welcome in my life. Ever. Esther Norine Designs
They are not welcome in my life either. If ever I decide to move away, it will be some place where earthquakes don't happen!!
Deletemoving to costa rica this past year i felt my first one! and there had only been maybe three up until about a month and a half ago when we have had 4 big ones! its getting a little worrisome just because they are happening so frequently. hopefully they will settle down soon!
ReplyDeleteyikes! I would be terrified feeling them that frequently. I am sure they will settle down soon too, I think its common for them to occur after a big quake.
DeleteI found you on Pretty Little Inspirations blog hop and began reading some of your older posts.....
ReplyDeleteI live in California so yes, I have been through earthquakes. Experienced a 6.2 that was centered about 10 miles from where I was (1984). Also went through the 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake that devastated so much of the Bay Area in 1989. My family and I don't mind them, they are fun as long as there is no damage/injuries.....

Thanks for stopping by and saying hi Christine!
DeleteWe have tons of earthquakes off Vancouver Island, but most of them are small enough so we never feel them. I just hope it stays that way, at least for the next few years while I am living in a tall building.
